If you believe sin is against you, then you need to strengthen your spirit. The reason is the desires of your body (flesh) are quite opposite from your spirit. It’s obvious that our flesh does what it wants many times, this is the reason we must learn how to muscle up our spirit.
Be honest now, how much time do you spend feeding, grooming, watching TV, and a host of other things for your body? Now, compare this to the things you do to make your spirit stronger? If your like most of us the answer will be 98% body and 2% spirit, if that.
Building a Stronger Spirit
Based on those number above is it any wonder why sin is able to influence us to do unhealthy things.
Lets look at three things we can do to for our spirit.
- Fasting – do you think God asks you to do this for fun? No, there’s a purpose. One is to give your body a break, allow it to clean itself. If your constantly eating processed foods and things of this nature, of course there is a time when your body gets tired. Secondly, it’s an exercise for spirit over flesh. Fasting is a discipline, a way to take command over your fleshes desires. In this case it’s eating.
- Tests – when you come up against situations where one of the 7 deadly sins is involved, how do you react? Do you meet anger with more anger? If you use these situations to exercise different responses, then you are gaining strength in your spirit.
- Prayer – this is the big one. As mentioned, if your feeding your flesh with all the junk of the world like T.V. shows with never ending violence/sex, constant stress, eating poorly, then how does your spirit have a chance to battle back? Sin hates prayer, because this is nutrition for your spirit. But to do this you have to start moving away from things that feed the flesh and replace them with things that feed your spirit, this is prayer.
I’m not saying you have to pray 5 hours a day, in fact I’m suggesting that you read and learn more about how we function.
Body and Spirit
To finish of the thought of prayer, my only suggestion is to turn off the TV for an hour a night and read the bible. Start to balance things a little more, understand what God prescribes for a stronger spirit, work some of that into your daily routine and slowly you will see the changes.
The last point of this post is a thought. If our body was suppose to be the dominant thing in our lives, then how come we leave it here when we die?
Our spirit is what moves on, but it’s the thing we ignore the most. Only you can decide what’s important for you. if you believe there is nothing beyond this life, then giving the flesh what it wants makes sense, no matter who it hurts.
If you believe your spirit continues on, then you’ll want to use this time to strengthen your spirit in preparation for the next step.
