When is alcoholism intervention right? What is your involvement in the process? Is it even your place to get involved?
All good questions and sometimes you won’t have a definite answer. What we do know is alcoholism is an addiction and the question is, should it be handled the same as a drug detox?
You might or might not be surprised to know that more than 15% of the population has some form of alcohol problems. We are led down this path for may reasons.
Reasons to Intervene
Lets look at a few reasons you must intervene for a friend or loved one.
- Health – they won’t quit drinking even though it’s killing them.
- Relationships – drinking is destroying their relationships.
- Missing Work/School – pattern changes for the worse.
- Repeatedly Failed to Stop – they have good intentions, but bad results, get them help.
Christian Intervention
Folks that believe in God have problems too. Sin doesn’t care, it knows how we are. God or no God, if you allow it in it will take up residency in your daily life. If you are of faith, then christian intervention makes the process easier.
Lets look at some of the methods used:
- Being close to one’s faith. Many use faith to guide them through the most difficult times in their lives. Struggling with alcoholism would certainly qualify as one of these defining moments. Christian alcohol rehab allows the individual to remain close to their faith while undergoing detox, counseling and other recovery programs.
- Connecting with other Christians. Being around like-minded people of the same faith, who are also going through the challenges of addiction recovery, can prove to be a huge plus in one’s pursuit of sobriety. Daily interactions with other Christians strengthen the soul and provide much-needed support.
- Regular services. One of the hallmarks of a Christian alcohol rehab program is regular church services for patients and their families. Many alcohol rehab facilities will have a member of the clergy come to the facility daily to hold sermons or speak individually with patients in a private one-on-one environment.
Intervention Process
The basic process of intervention is confronting the alcoholic with how his drinking has effected everyone around him.
The alcoholic’s family, friends, and employers tell the alcoholic in their own words how his (or her) drinking has been a problem in their lives. The whole purpose is to get the person into a rehab program.
The intervention can have two effects.
First, they can desire help and the emotional push of this process can be just what’s needed for them to decide to do it.
Second, they could feel ganged up on and rebel, this could drive them away even further from rehab.
Professional help with one who is experienced in this process is highly advised.
If you don’t believe in prayer you might start. Alcoholism intervention is the first step, but remember with any addiction there will be a battle, a battle to regain control.
Prayer will help stave off these attacks and help you maintain a mindset of “Don’t Want Sin” running your life, what you think is VERY IMPORTANT in this battle.
