There comes a time when everyone needs help getting through tough times, counseling can help. In this article we want to focus on christian counseling because this form of counseling coincides with the ways of sin.
How Does Christian Counseling Work?
Christian counseling and secular counseling both share the same desire, they want to help you overcome your problems.
Most counselors have graduate degrees and have spent years learning their craft.
Counseling involves working with the past and present. What this means is counselors probe the past (whether the problem happened a week ago or during childhood) in an attempt to repair the present. They must also explore possible affects of physical and chemical imbalances that can cause physiological problems. A major part of counseling is resolving and restoring conflicts between people.
Why Christian Counseling?
Christian counseling revolves around the spiritual core of problems, there is a different reasoning when it comes to the root cause of problems.
Biblical counseling seeks to carefully discover those areas in which a Christian may be disobedient to the principles and commands of Scripture and can help you learn how to lovingly submit to God’s will.
You see the key word here is “Learn”, if you don’t understand God, Sin and these things, then Christian counseling will mean nothing to you. And if you want to know more, then you have to learn the basics for this form of counseling to be effective.
Who Can Use Christian Counseling?
We generally seek counseling when we are in trouble, when we have strife in out lives.
Take a look at the following and see which ones apply to you:
- Addiction
- Anger
- Depression
- Guilt
- Broken Relationship
- Grief
- Loneliness
- Remorse
- Regret
Obviously this is not a complete list, but the feeling most of us have is a feeling of being trapped, being emotionally trapped in a situation that makes us unhappy.
The longer we suppress these negative emotions the higher the risk is that we will contract some sort of health issue. This is one of many reasons we need to confront these problems head on before the downward spiral gets worse.
It’s the intervention of a counselor that can drive a wedge into your problem and stop it from getting worse, we need to understand what’s at the core of the problem so we can correct it.
What is the Benefit?
The benefit is getting it out of your system, gaining some clarity to your situation, understanding some of the other possibilities like how sin works and what you are up against.
Understand that nothing starts (good or bad) without a thought. Where these thoughts come from is the jackpot question. Many times it’s what we see and hear that creates thoughts, but it’s how we cultivate it from there that creates problems. It’s our minds that take things and blows them out of proportion. Sin has a character about it that wants to take a mole hill and turn it into a mountain.
The benefit of Christian counseling lies in the fact that there is this thing called Sin tapping you on the shoulder at times provoking you to think negatively. And if you understand this you can save yourself a lot of grief by rejecting thoughts, not all thoughts, but thoughts that can be harmful to us.
Letting Go of a Heavy Load
Counseling can help you rid yourself of whatever heavy load you are shouldering.
Carrying a load of guilt can literally kill you over time. Again, we assume you have lingering problems that you are harboring past the normal time frame. This is when the stress can turn to pain and some people look to drugs or alcohol for relief, but we all know these are not cures.
Places to Start Talking To
If you’re confused and want help turn to family and friends. I can tell you they won’t have the answers you need, but by talking you have opened the doors to self examination. It won’t hurt to seek Christian counseling either and some online sources might also help, but ultimately the answers you need will come from within.
There’s no disgrace in seeking help, especially christian counseling, the disgrace is keeping it trapped inside and letting it destroy you, it doesn’t have to be that way.
