Over the past 50 years of interpreting dreams, I cannot recall one person with whom I have interpreted dreams for or discussed dreams with who hasn’t experienced at least one dream of drowning.
To better understand drowning or coming close to drowning in dreams, you must first understand what WATER actually means in drowning dreams and dreams in general.
The Meaning of Water in Drowning Dreams
Clean, Clear Water Clean, clear water represents God, the Holy Spirit forgiveness, compassion, purity of heart, physical spiritual cleansing and blessing. In other dreams, water is symbolic of setbacks, hindrances presenting challenges and testing. In this type of dream, the width of the body of water determines the time frame or how long the dreamer will undergo circumstances. While the water depth determines the intensity of difficulty the test, obstacle, challenge or setback will present to the dreamer.
In most dreams involving drowning, the challenge or test that caused the dream is related to emotional, material, health and or unanswered spirituality questions. It is not unusual for dreams of drowning to transfer into our personal and financial lives, as a result of problems, events or situations where we feel trapped in and can find no answers or solutions.
Reasons Behind Drowning Dreams
One of the chief reasons for the dreamer to dream he’s drowning, under the water or being pulled under water and helpless to swim to the surface represents a predicament involving the dreamer’s family, health, relationship, career, job or finances.
In the same way, emptiness, sorrow, remorse, self-pity, grief, loneliness, wishing to escape, giving up, depression, abandonment, emotional stress and a spiritual void often results in the dreamer having dreams of drowning.
Christian Based Interpretation
For The Christian: Christians and non Christians alike can experience dreams of drowning for the same reasons. But for the whole, the normal faith-based Christian has dreams different than the above mentioned, which represents an entirely different and unique set of challenges.
Challenges involve blessings and gifts that God wants to bestow upon His people. Often, the blessing or gift will be determined by how cleanly or to what degree the dreamer comes out victorious through and after the end of the challenge or test of faith shown in the dream.
In like manner, as with non Christians, the Christian also experiences dreams of drowning for having turned his back on God, did or is about to backslide into flesh nature, worldly temptations or a returning to an unhealthy relationship or old habit. Drowning dreams are symbolic of God calling a Christian back to repentance.
Victory Over Drowning
For the dreamer to be dreaming he is drowning and yet somehow manages by his own strength and determination to pull himself back up to the surface represents victory. The magnitude of the obstacle or pressure you are facing in real life manifests itself in your dreams, resolving this in a dream state reinforces your ability to handle the circumstances in real life.
Diving into clear water and seeing the bottom represents strength, stability, a self starter, having foresight and the ability to plan ahead.
Diving into dirty murky water represents a headstrong person who abandons logic, acts hastily and the dreamer does not think ahead or plan for the future. He is self-absorbed, prideful, selfish, thinks only of himself, what he wants and he is not considerate of others or their feelings.

Dreams are a reflection of emotions, thoughts that our subconscious mind stores up for those times that nature has provided for us to release them through dreams.
For the dreamer who is drowning the interpretation can vary according to belief and individual situations.
For some it could be a feeling of being out of control of ones life. Losing a job, an addiction, a fear, the dream mirrors how you feel your real life is and drowning is a representation of all those feelings bundled into one dream.
For others this type of dream is a challenge, a sort of sink or swim scenario. Maybe it’s your business that is teetering on profitability, it could be a relationship that’s on rocky ground. Dreams have general plots, but are unique when applied to each persons situation.
