Understanding Sin

When trying to define the word SIN you have to put it in some sort of context.

Sin is generally associated with a religious belief, a sort of heaven and hell type of thing. Lets make this easy, when we say SIN lets think of negative, negative forces where when these forces are at work the results end up BAD.

So, to be able to deal with these forces and understand what they are all about lets not look at sin as some mythical uncontrollable creature, lets look at sin as a force that we need to control.

Where Does Sin Come From?

I don’t know, I just don’t know.

What I do know is when we allow our words and actions to hurt others, in my book this is a Sin. I think we all agree things like murder, stealing, rape, I would say everybody would classify these as sins.

The gray area comes into play when we talk about anxiety, anger, greed, envy, things like this where emotions and feeling are involved. Would you consider these types of sin? They can hurt you and they are negative attributes and we said sin is a negative force.

What Feels Good Isn’t Always Good

When you are angry it feels good to let loose on someone.

The question is, did it really do any good? When we let loose it feels good for the moment, but what is the long term effect?

In a moment of anger you can say many things you do not mean, but once you say the words it’s to late. Oh, you can say you’re sorry, but the person you scolded doesn’t have to forget – they can forgive, but they DON’T HAVE TO FORGET.

I went through a period of time when I was angry at everything, but with the few people I am close to I always bit my tongue and I’m glad I did. But, don’t think that there wasn’t that negative force inside pushing me to LET LOOSE, boy it would have felt good sometimes to do it, but looking back I’m glad I didn’t.

Actions Come From Thoughts

What I learned from all of this is the power of out thoughts.

If you think about it almost everything we do starts with a thought. In fact, lets list a few:

  • I think I’ll go to the store
  • I’m thinking to go out tonight
  • I have to get up at 6 AM
  • It’s time to go to school
  • Lets go to the movies

You see, thoughts dictate everything we do. Now the question is, what creates thoughts?

Creating and Controlling Thoughts

What you think about what you are reading right now will dictate if you keep reading.

This is the point where we either believe in sin (negative force) or a positive force (lets say GOD).

The whole point of understanding this stuff is so we can understand why we do things. And if we understand that we can start to control the things we do.

Lets tryout an analogy here. Picture your mind as being like your television set, your television is receiving signals from many different stations. Now a days with cable there are hundreds of channels to watch, but you can’t watch them all at once so you have to control them. Plus, there are channels you want to watch and others you don’t, you control all of this with your remote control.

Lets compare this to our mind. Your mind gets all sorts of thoughts coming into it, good and bad, how do you control it?

You control it just like you do your television, you CHOOSE what you think about.

The Responsibility of Thinking

This is where we get into trouble, being responsible for actions.

Another example: I like sweets, but eating to much at one time would create a massive headache. Many nights sitting at home I would be watching TV when a thought came into my head, it would be a thought about how good that cake we had on the counter tasted, or how tasty a snickers bar is, just a thought – right?

The thought turned into an urge and even knowing the headache thing I allowed the urge to become an action. You can guess the rest of the story, and this happened many times.

By giving control to this thought I did get a temporary pleasure, but the end result was a long term headache.

Now, you may think this is a stretch, but I believe these thoughts come from negative sources (sin) to create pain in our lives. On the other hand it cannot force us to do things, we have to ALLOW it to happen, and this is where the responsibility comes in.

It’s easy to curse when you are angry, it’s easy to have a drink or two of six when you’re sad, it’s easy to have extra marital affairs when it feels good, sin tells you it’s OK and it plants the thoughts of how GOOD it feels. But where is sin when you get into trouble, the little rascal is right there telling you how bad you are, it’s now whipping you for doing what it said was OK to do in the first place.

You and I are responsible for what we think, once you assume this responsibility you will have the remote (television) back in your hand and life will be much better.

This is the reason we need to understand how sin works, take back control and you will be much happier for it.
